Bella Italia style that won't burn a hole in your pocket
Alfa Romeo, alongside Ferrari, must be the most evocative car name of all time. Much of that is due to the company's achingly cool convertibles.
We have had a classic Alfa Romeo Spider, as featured in The Graduate, on our fleet since day one and we've always had a soft spot for the Italian marque. So when we were looking for a new inexpensive convertible to add to our fleet it made sense to consider the later modern Alfa Romeo Spider. This stylish two seater was lauded on its introduction in 1995 for its attractive styling and clever packaging, which includes a decent size boot and comfortable passenger compartment. And so we added one.
The latest addition to the Great Escape Classic Car Hire fleet in the Cotswolds is a 1998 model finished in black metallic with a black leather interior. The car is a 150 bhp 2 litre Twin Spark - a classic Alfa Romeo engine - and has power steering, power windows, power mirrors and a five speed manual gearbox. The manual roof is simple and quick to operate.
We have put the new Alfa Spider into our cheapest hire category - as it is relatively modern it is reliable and cheap to run compared to our older classics. The price of £95 for 24 hrs or £160 for 48 hrs includes unlimited mileage, insurance for 1 driver (extra drivers are £25 each) and full UK breakdown cover.
"There is something about an Alfa," explains Graham Eason of Great Escape. "The modern Spider is a worthy successor to the original being fun to drive, stylish and practical."
