The original Alfa Romeo Spider was known as the Duetto and was created by Alfa Romeo in 1966 to meet demand for a small, stylish and sporty two seater. It was designed to compete against MGs and Triumphs but in the UK, due to import duties, it actually cost more than a Jaguar E-Type.
In the late ‘80s Alfa Romeo commissioned Pininfarina to update its original design and launched the Series 4 in 1990. More luxurious than earlier versions, it still retains the essential charm of the original Duetto.
On the road the Alfas are simple, easy and rewarding to drive. The handling is precise, the steering communicative and the ride firm but very comfortable. It is great fun on twisting B-roads, but it is really at home in sweeping bends rather than corkscrew turns.
